A Conversation in Song

A socially engaged performance made for the Climate Portals Project during the COP26 climate conference which took place in Glasgow in 2021.

Singing, specifically intergenerational singing, forms foundational moments of resilience in many cultures, countries and individual lives; faith, mourning, collectivism and the birth of new people, living things and ideas can all be marked through song. These things also make up this moment of climate crisis. This performance hopes to connect with singers and listeners in building a way to lean into these troubling times and look to the future.

This work was an offering from Kaiya and her family members - Aunt, Grandmother and Sister - to participants in Mexico and Rwanda to sing, listen and share a capella songs over distance.

Concept by Kaiya Bartholomew.

Lyrics and melodies by assorted artists.

Performed by Kaiya Bartholomew, Jane Bartholomew, Frankie Jo Bartholomew and Jan Bartholomew.

And when I rise, let me rise, like a bird

Joyfully

And when I fall, let me fall, like a leaf

Gracefully

And when I sing, let me sing, like a lark

Wholeheartedly

And when we sing, let us sing, sing together

Harmoniously
